About this objectDonald Smith was born and grew up in Forres. He emigrated to Canada in 1838 and worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He was promoted through the company and eventually made its governor in 1889. Smith played an important role in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, invested in companies on both sides of the Atlantic. He made generous donations to hospitals and educational institutions and gave £8000 to the construction costs of Leanchoil Hospital. He also gifted the land at Chapelton where the hospital was built. Smith was appointed High Commissioner to London in 1896 and created Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal of Glencoe and Colonsay the following year. He died in London on 21 January 1914 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery.
